Nació en Baltimore y de niño descubrió la música en el taller de reparación de radios de su padre, Ben Glass, quien introdujo a sus hijos en el mundo de la música de cámara.
El futuro compositor se familiarizaría enseguida con los cuartetos de Beethoven, las sonatas de Schubert, las sinfonías de Shostakovich y otras músicas entonces consideradas excéntricas.
Glass se inició en el violín a los seis años y comenzó a dedicarse a la flauta a los ocho años en el conservatorio Peabody.

Admitido en la Universidad de Chicago y, animado por sus padres, se trasladó a esa ciudad, donde se mantenía con trabajos de media jornada, sirviendo mesas y cargando aviones en aeropuertos. Se especializó en matemáticas y filosofía y en sus ratos libres practicaba el piano y estudiaba compositores como Ives y Webern. A los diecinueve años, Glass se graduó en la Universidad de Chicago y, habiendo decidido dedicarse a la composición, se trasladó a Nueva York para estudiar en la Juilliard School, donde empezó a tocar casi exclusivamente el piano. Por entonces había abandonado las técnicas dodecafónicas que había estado utilizando en Chicago y se decantó por compositores americanos como Copland y William Schuman. A la edad de treinta y tres años Glass había estudiado con Vincent Persichetti, Darius Milhaud y William Bergsma.

Había rechazado el serialismo y prefería compositores inconformistas como Harry Partch, Ives, Moondog, Henry Cowell y Virgil Thomson, pero él aún no había encontrado su propio estilo. Tras estudiar con Nadia Boulanger y trabajar con Ravi Shankar (oir) en Francia, Glass viajó en 1966 al norte de la India, principalmente por razones religiosas, donde entró en contacto con los refugiados tibetanos. Se hizo budista y conoció al Dalai Lama en 1972, así como al poeta Allen Ginsberg. Es un gran defensor de la causa tibetana. Fue su trabajo con Ravi Shankar y su percepción del ritmo aditivo en la música india, lo que le condujo a su singular estilo. Cuando volvió a casa, renunció a todas sus composiciones anteriores al estilo de Milhaud y de Copland y empezó a escribir piezas austeras basadas en ritmos aditivos y con un sentido del tempo influenciado por Samuel Beckett, cuyo trabajo descubrió componiendo para obras de teatro experimentales.

El poco aprecio que siente hacia los intérpretes y los espacios tradicionales lo llevan a formar su propio grupo musical, el Philip Glass Ensemble, con el que empieza a tocar principalmente en galerías de arte y otros ambientes underground. Estos tiempos durísimos, que abarcaron casi la totalidad de la década de los 70, le obligaron a trabajar como taxista y reparador de electrodomésticos a la vez que componía e interpretaba.

La música de esta primera época es extremadamente repetitiva, austera y complicada para el oyente (oir), lo que le supuso una gran incomprensión por parte de la crítica y el público. El propio Glass comentaba que cuando alguien del público se quedaba hasta el final, le invitaban a cenar. Sólo empezó a ser reconocido a partir de su colaboración con el escenógrafo, también minimalista, Robert Wilson, con quien realizó la ópera experimental Einstein on the Beach (oir), un alegato antinuclear con libreto escrito por un psicótico donde cada elemento clásico del género operístico es renovado y alterado de modo consciente. Aún así, a pesar del relativo éxito de la obra, tiene que seguir trabajando como reparador durante un tiempo antes de poder dedicarse totalmente a la música.
Con sus cuatro horas y media, Einstein on the Beach (hoy sí es considerada un hito del teatro musical del siglo XX), fue la primera ópera de una trilogía basada en personajes que cambiaron el curso de la historia del siglo XX con sus ideas. La trilogía fue continuada con Satyagraha, creada para la Opera de Holanda en 1980, y Akhnaten, para la Opera de Stuttgart en 1984. Otras obras escénicas que siguieron son The Photographer (1980), The Civil Wars (1984), The Juniper Tree (1986), The Making of the Representative for Planet 8 (1988), The Fall of the House Usher (1988), Hydrogen Jukebox (1990), The Voyage (1992) encargada por el Metropolitan en honor a Colón, y la ópera de cámara Orphée (1993) basada en la película de Jean Cocteau.

Philip Glass también es conocido por sus colaboraciones con algunas de las principales figuras de la danza contemporánea, incluyendo Twyla Tharp y Lucinda Childs (A Descent into the Maelstrom, In the Upper Room). Ha escrito una gran cantidad de partituras de concierto como cinco cuartetos de cuerda, un concierto para violín (1987) encargado por la American Composers Orchestra, el poema sinfónico The Light (1987) comisionado por la Cleveland Orchestra, Itaipú (1988) encargado por el Coro y la Sinfónica de Atlanta, The Canyon (1988) escrito para la Filarmónica de Rótterdam.

Analog (2006)

Orange Mountain Music’s new release of “Philip Glass – ANALOG” contains three seminal works in Glass’s musical history. In the late 1970’s, Philip Glass was asked by two film producers, François de Menil and Barbara Rose, to write music for a film they were producing. The film was “Mark di Suvero, Sculptor” and it was Glass’s first film score, predating even Koyaanisqatsi. The score took its titles from the names of di Suvero sculptures shown in the film, including Etoile Polaire (North Star) and others. Dressed like an Egg is a never before released early Glass score which was written as incidental music to a Mabou Mines Theater Company production in 1977.

The disc is rounded out with another never-before-heard recording of Glass’ Mad Rush for organ. Mad Rush was originally used by choreographer Lucinda Childs for a dance of the same name. All the performances on Analog feature original performances by Philip Glass on electric organ.

Philip Glass - Looking Glass (2005)

This documentary captures the overflowing energy and activity of one today's greatest composers, Philip Glass, and allows us to follow him from New York to London and from Paris to Boston. He speaks about his beginnings, his moving to Paris for two years of intensive study with Nadia Boulanger, his meeting with Indian musician Ravi Shankar and director Robert Wilson, who had a deep influence on his career. The film also shows him at work on the last details of his opera The Sound of a Voice, directed by Robert Woodruff and conducted by Alan Johnson.

Éric Darmon's camera, with its poetic shots and original framings, takes us for a musical journey into seven months of the life of the composer who, rising from the underground scene of the seventies, brought on a revolution in modern theater.

"Heroes," like the "Low" Symphony of several years ayo, is based on the work of David Bowie and Eno. In a series of innovative recordings made in the late 70's, David and Brian combined influences from world music, experimental avant-garde, and rock & roll and thereby redefined the future of popular music. The continuing influence of these works has secured their stature as part of the new "classics" of our time.

Just as composers of the past have turned to music of their time to fashion new works, the work of Bowie and Eno became an inspiration and point of departure of for a series of symphonies of my own.

As I have been involved with the world of dance for many years I naturally mentioned the "Heroes" Symphony to the American choreographer Twyla Tharp. Straight away she wanted "Heroes" for her new dance company, and soon after, we met with David. He immediately shared Twyla's enthusiasm and I found myself writing a symphonic score shortly to become a ballet.

Music by Philip Glass. Libretto (French) by the composer based on the film by Jean Cocteau.

Based on Cocteau's fascinating retelling of the Orpheus myth, Orphée, the first opera of Philip Glass' Cocteau Trilogy, is an extended parable on the life of an artist, a poet harassed and misunderstood by peers. His success leads to the ridicule by fellow poets, ending in a creatively crippling isolation. With a renewed apprehension of his own mortality, Orphee regains his emotional stregnth, enabling him to ignore the trials of ordinary life, freeing him to be a poet. The poets Orphee and Cegeste, Euridice, and a mysterious Princess interact within the worlds of the living and the dead, existing in that mysterious realm that separates the two worlds. Love triumphs and thus returns Orphee and Euridice to mortal life, with no remaining consciousness of their unusual time spent between "the worlds". The Princess has violated the laws of life and death one time too many and is banished into oblivion.

The "Low" Symphony, composed in the Spring of 1992, is based on the record "Low" by David Bowie and Brian Eno first released in 1977. The record consisted of a number of songs and instrumentals and used techniques which were similar to procedures used by composers working in new and experimental music. As such, this record was widely appreciated by musicians working both in the field of "pop" music and in experimental music and was a landmark work of that period.
I've taken themes from three of the instrumentals on the record and, combining them with material of my own, have used them as the basis of three movements of the Symphony. Movement one comes from "Subterraneans," movement two from "Some Are" and movement three from "Warszawa."

Anima Mundi (1993)

Documental corto dirigido en 1991 por Godfrey Reggio. La película se centra en el mundo de la naturaleza y la vida salvaje, particularmente en las selvas, vida marina e insectos. Fue filmada por encargo de la empresa de joyería Bulgari para uso por parte del Fondo Mundial para la Naturaleza en su programa de diversidad biológica.

La banda sonora fue compuesta por Philip Glass, quien también trabajó con Reggio en Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi y Naqoyqatsi. Anima Mundi trata del mundo de la naturaleza del mundo salvaje, particularmente la selva, el mundo marino y los insectos. Está rodada empleando muchas de las técnicas de la trilogía Qatsi. Pese a ser producida entre Powaqqatsi y Naqoyqatsi, no se considera relacionada con la serie.

Is a 1991 short documentary film directed by Godfrey Reggio. The film focuses on the world of nature and wildlife, particularly jungles, sealife, and insects. The movie was commissioned by Italian jewellers Bulgari for use by the World Wildlife Fund in their Biological Diversity Program.

The film was scored by Philip Glass, who had also worked with Reggio on Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Naqoyqatsi. Anima Mundi features many of the techniques from the "Qatsi" movies, and was produced in between the release of Powaqqatsi and Naqoyqatsi, but is not considered to be related to the series.

Historica colaboración que cierra el círculo que comenzó cuando un prometedor joven músico americano, Philip Glass se encuentra con el maestro indio Ravi Shankar en París en 1965 y le convence a éste para que le ayude a componer una de sus primeras composiciones para bandas sonoras, Chappacqua de Conrad Rook. Shankar hizo las composiciones para sitar del film. Influyendo notablemente en Glass, la musica india, sus ritmos y texturas marcaron de forma notable el estilo peculiar de Glass.

Este documental ayudó a exculpar a un hombre, Randall Adams quien estaba condenado a cadena perpetua por el asesinato de un policia, algo que se demostró que no había hecho. Morris con su estilo repetitivo, obsesivo y su manera de contar la historia, con la que la música hipnoptica de Glass, se acoplaba a la perfección.
Nonesuch Records realizó un CD del soundtrack que incluiía narración y dialogos del documental. El disco que ahora se realiza nos expone los primeros materiales de Glass y material extra antes ni publicado, esta vez sin diálogos ni narración.

Poe's famous horror story has fascinated poets, dramatized and composers for over a century for over a century. Poe hints at much, but states hardly anything at all. Is the story real, or is it a hallucination? What are the relationship between the narrator (William), his friend Roderick Usher, and Roderick's dying sister, Madeline? Has she been buried alive, or is it a demon from hell who takes such a spectacular revenge at the end? And is the vast house in which they live a living malignant entity? Incest, homosexuality, murder, and the supernatural hang in the air, but then again, such things may exist only in the imagination of the audience.
